Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge.

Wow, what an amazing sequel to a truly fantastic series! This was another book that I could not hardly put down! I love the premise of these books and the fact that Katniss is so rebellious makes for some interesting twists and turns in Catching Fire. I wish that I could say more about this book but I am afraid I will reveal too much if I say much more! I will say that I loved the major twist at the end of the book and I cannot wait to see what happens in book three. Unfortunately, I have to wait at least another 10 months before it comes out!
**Again, if anyone wishes to discuss spoilers in the comments, that would be great!**

ok, so sarah palin is releasing a book. and it's filled with some insightful, thoughtful gems [15 Nov 2009|08:00am]
moby_journal

ok, so sarah palin is releasing a book. and it's filled with some insightful, thoughtful gems, like: 'here's my philosophy on being a carnivore: If God had not intended for us to eat animals, how come He made them out of meat?'  -sarah palin.

well, mrs. palin, let's look a bit more closely at what you've written. you believe that god intended for us to eat animals because they're made out of meat. ahem. i mean, i'm not a professional logician, but i can see that the extension of your logic might lead you to some places with which you might be uncomfortable. bear with me, ok?

your logic sort of stands as:

1 meat is good (due to the fact that you like it)

2 animals are made out of meat (which is obvious, as meat is the stuff that surrounds their bones)

3 thus eating animals is good (and divinely sanctioned).

the problem, of course, being that other things are also made out of meat. like, well, people. and doggies and kitties. and cute little human babies. so if we follow your logic, mrs palin, you are actually suggesting that god intended for us to eat humans and dogs and cats and human babies, as these things are all technically made out of meat. i'm not even being swiftian, i'm just exposing sarah palin's thoughts to some simple logic. which might be problematic, as she is also the person who once talked about looking out her window and seeing vladimir putin staring back (although he's technically 8,000 miles away, unless he's recently moved to kamchatka). or perhaps they do things differently in the palin household, who knows. perhaps she really does think that we're intended to eat humans and kittens and babies, as god did make them (aka-us, in some cases) out of meat. i meah, let's be clear, she's a crazy sociopath, so anything is possible.

Meet Oxana~! [15 Nov 2009|06:33pm]

Oxana, our new Australian Cattle Dog, stole our hearts today. She was absolutely adorable, well-behaved, and house-broken! Thank goodness. Her original name was Radar, but Russ and I didn't think it really suit her. So I thought about how much I liked the names Russ used for his characters on EVE, and although I don't like the game itself, his character name was perfect for her. Zeek and Oxana got along great, and we're really happy to add another ACD to the family. =) The woman and the Humane Society said they were a match made in heaven. It's funny, she'd look right at me for a picture, and just as I'd snap it, she'd move. D: Somehow, we managed to get another purebred ACD from the Humane Society, kind of strange.

Apparently we didn't end up taking video like I thought, but I'll post some when she's home after she's been spayed. =)

Hi. I'm relatively new to this community and relatively new to Aussie cattle dogs. Here's a photo of Taz. She's eight months old now, but is a bit younger here.

Now for a question. She has this habit of digging divots in the yard, and while she does she yaps and yaps and yaps. She digs for a while, then noses around in the hole like she's found something, but there's never anything there. Is this a trait of ACDs that I don't know about, or just a quirk of hers?

so it's Loki's 'gotcha' day.

2 years ago today, I took an ill-advised trip to my local pound "just to look" and ended up giving my heart to a 5.5 mo old 'Abel'.

After pleading and wheedling with my then fiance, I went and picked him up and saved him from the big 'E' that he was already slated for.

Seriously, how could ANYone have not wanted this face:

and now, I can't believe I've had my little spaz-mutt Loki for 2 whole years!

so today i'm a bit sentimental over my little acd/bc wonder mutt and just wanted to share. :)

Sad, but true: An indie bookseller's job is...

Glenn Beck: Cry-baby, conspiracy theorist...and thriller fic's #1 sales booster?

Find out if the rumors about Robin are true. Queersupe has compiled an A-Z list of gay comic book characters.

The Guardian UK imitates the impotent ire of indie British booksellers, b*tches about How Waterstone's Killed Bookselling.

Sometimes the best way to introduce a link is to just quote the linked-to article's title: J.J. Abrams Finishes Reading Dark Tower, Decides Not To Adapt It. Ouch.

THB and Heavy Liquid creator Paul Pope just won the 'Silver Dildo' for Sexiest Art at the first annual Fleshbot Awards. You can peep some of Pope's work here.

Mr. Rogers was an inspiration to countless puppet-loving, trolley obsessed, postman-fetishizing kids. So why the hell are they defaming his memory with this stomach-churning statue?

I was born a few years too late to enjoy this particular cultural touchstone, but Maxim's 12 Superheroes Who Should Be On '70s Vans makes me wish I was around when the airbrush artist was king.

During Sunday's very special 'unplugged' Moby show at the Palace Theatre in London, there will be a short interlude where Moby will answer interview questions put forward by the audience. The interview session will be presented by leading music critic, Sophie Heawood.*

The best questions will be read out during the show!

She has interviewed everyone from Lily Allen to Animal Collective, Snoop Dogg to Dangermouse, Lionel Richie to Patti Smith, Moby to Tiesto.  She has flown around Brazil with Iron Maiden on their private jet, forced David Cameron to make a statement about Cheryl Cole after the New Statesman published her ground-breaking 'Girls Aloud: The Politics Interview', been banned from working with Razorlight, and broke Mark Morrison's jet-ski in Barbados... need we say more!

i've written about insomnia before. it's such a strange malady, and one from which i suffer pretty r [13 Nov 2009|10:25am]
moby_journal

i've written about insomnia before. it's such a strange malady, and one from which i suffer pretty regularly, but only when i do stupid things like fly from california to switzerland.

it involves breaking my agrarian bodyclock. i'm convinced that my bodyclock wanted me to be a farmer. simple, up with the chickens, to sleep with the sun. better than up with the sun and sleeping with chickens, i'm assuming.

insomnia is so odd, as it's so self-destructive, but yet solely the product of the self. it's only the self. the self at war with itself. the brain deciding it somehow knows best, even though it's crippled by delusion. the delusion that somehow being awake in a comfortable bed in the middle of the night is better than being asleep in aforementioned comfy bed in the middle of the night. the brain says, in it's reptilian core, 'oh, you are trying to trick me, see, you're telling me it's time for sleep but i know better, i'm the responsible one, so i'll keep us awake to make sure we're not eaten by bears or giant sharks.' you try to reason with your brain, saying, 'but brain, look, we're in a hotel room, it's 2009, you are being given a prime opportunity to sleep, why are you keeping us awake? and, for the record, it's been awhile since anyone has been eaten by a bear or a giant shark while staying in a hotel in paris.' but the brain, in its atavistic intransigence, thinks it knows better. the higher learning centers (the nouveau riche johnny-come-lately yuppies of brain architecture) take a back seat to the lizard brain, the limbic brain, the amygdala or whichever tiny peach-pit sized part of the brain decides that sleep is optional.

and then the quasi-hallucinations start to kick in (usually when you've had less than an hours sleep in a 48 hour period, and then preceded by another 48 hour period with 3 hours of sleep). the floor starts moving on its own. people's heads look larger than they actually are. lights move of their own accord. and the eyelids, or the inside of the eyelids, take on the consistency of a dogs tongue. a sandpaper dog, made out of coconut husks. insomnia is a red demon, like anchovies with teeth, filled with revenge.

the idiot pushes his stupid self to the breaking point and is then surprised when things break. the parents eat sour grapes and the childrens teeth are set on edge. assuming the insomniac is also the same person suffering from insomnia. that could only possibly make sense if you, too, haven't slept for a long time. and with the insomnia comes the wide eyed panic. the 'i'm never going to sleep again' panic. the 'this is going to kill me' panic. but it's an unreasonable panic(s), as insomnia is invariably followed by sleep. at some point. when the brain stem decides that it's finally ready to give in. when the bars are removed from the windows and the sleep gods come and whack you on the head with angelic ball peen hammers, resulting in perfect and god given cold sleep. here are some pictures. one of an empty venue and one of a street in paris as seen from a car.

Empty Venue- Le Zenith

Eifell Tower Paris

and a word of warning, never offer to shoot an insomniac in the head, as there's a very good chance they'll happily accept your offer in order to finally stop being awake.

My dad told me the other day that I needed to weigh 95 pounds to be considered thin. 95 pounds! Really? I mean I weighed that in high school, but I was a bony little thing....except my butt, which has always been a bit curvier than I wish. It's annoying because I've been feeling pretty good about myself lately. I don't want my dad to be calling me fat. Although I suddenly understand why my mother has always weighed 100 and nothing.

I still sleep on the floor. I should really fix that.

oh, jeez [12 Nov 2009|02:45pm]

Three Tennessee football players were arrested early this morning for attempted armed robbery.

The robbery took place at the Pilot gas station on Cumberland Avenue, in the parking lot. (Which parking lot we at OCI share with the Pilot. This was literally within 500 feet of where I work.)

This is the same Pilot that Evil once robbed. He walked in, got two family size bags of chips, a couple cans of dip. Walked up to the counter and asked for nine packs of cigarettes to supply the whole party. Waited until the chips and dip were bagged and the total given to him, then said "Wow, that's a lot of cigarettes.... GANK!" Grabbing the cigarettes, he ran. When chased, he hollered "You shouldn't be chasing me, I could be dangerous!"

Evil got away with it. (That has such a ring to it, eh?) Here's why Nu'Keese Richardson, Mike Edwards, and Janzen Jackson did not:

Unlike Evil, the Saturday afternoon superstars were not on foot. This may seem like it actually would aide their escape, until you realize they were in a brand new 2010 Prius. Not too many of those cruising the Strip. Easily identifiable vehicle < running on foot.

Also, where'd those matching hoodies come from? I haven't been able to confirm it yet, but I've read the suggestion that this was official UT gear. Again, if that's true, easily identifiable.

Not to mention that these three are themselves very easily identifiable to everyone on the Strip.

My God. You know, the whole thing would have gone so much better for them if, instead of waving a freakin PELLET GUN around, they'd just walked up to the car, introduced themselves, and asked for twenty bucks. Better than even shot the guys in the car would have forked it over gladly.

Do you suppose Lil Wayne will shout out to UT in another song now?

New Release (self plug) [11 Nov 2009|10:39pm]

bowl9644
OK. The time for feedback is over (though feel free to continue voting in the previous entry's poll, I still want to know what you think.) I am now ready to announce (yes, that was VERY fast) the release of my essay collection, Books and Bad Habits. (Just in time for the holy days!)

It is available in two colors: one is a white background with a happy CHEERS! picture, the other is a yellow background (created by blowing up a picture of a glass of beer) with a picture of a man balancing a glass of beer on his head.

BOTH EDITIONS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THE LOW LOW INTRODUCTORY PRICE OF $8.99. (tee hee.) Actually, that will always be the price. But I'm thrilled that I can finally offer something for under 10 dollars.

The book contains 34 essays, taken from this livejournal and other blogs as well as some all new never-before-seen content.

The 34 essays are divided into five parts. "Some of My Days," "My American Dream," "Fear and Madness (Dark Thoughts and Terrible Ranting)," "Journeys and Trips (Good Times and Strange Encounters)," and "The Wisdom."

The American Dream section collects several posts and essays that chronicle my rise from a more-or-less retarded 19-year-old who'd never had a real job to 24-year-old burnout whose career almost killed him to 26-year-old whatever-it-is-I-am-today.

The other section titles are self-explanatory, I think.

Here's linky-links and pictures:

"Beer-flavored cover available here!"

"White cover available here!"

OK. I'm about to put out a collection of essays, largely comprised of posts from this journal mixed with original content (never-before-seen footage!)
It will be called BOOKS AND BAD HABITS, just like this journal.

I need your help for a cover. I have these two possibilities so far. Vote. Post comments.
(The black and/or white bars at top and bottom can be any color on either one. That's just the mockup.)

the health care legislation has passed the house of representatives [08 Nov 2009|08:00am]
moby_journal

the health care legislation has passed the house of representatives. finally. it's not a perfect bill. but it's a good bill. here's some of what it does (or will do, rather, when the senate and the president ratify it) -

1 it provides health care to 96% of americans (that's 35,000,000 more americans than currently have health care)

2 it prevents insurance companies from denying coverage based on pre-existing conditions.

3 it forces insurance companies to compete with each other and with the federal government in offering policies and coverage.

4 it prevents insurance companies from charging more based on the gender of the applicant and here's the great one:

5 it will remove the anti-trust exemption that insurance companies have 'enjoyed' for a long time. this means that insurance companies can be sued for collusion the same way companies in any other industry can.

it's a good day for the 35,000,000 americans who are currently uninsured, and it's a bad day for the insurance companies. hopefully you, like me, are on the side of the 35,000,000 americans who will now have health insurance. and hopefully you, like me, are on the side of the 200,000,000 americans who will no longer be denied coverage based on pre-existing conditions. unless you're a republican, then you're on the side of the insurance companies who have been funneling money into republican campaigns for decades. and if someone says 'i don't want my insurance provided by government bureaucrats' you can say, 'ok, so you'd rather your insurance be provided by insurance company bureaucrats who make bonuses by denying people coverage?' there's been so much misinformation circulating around this legislation (misinformation spread by republicans who have received hundreds of millions of dollars from insurance companies), so it's nice that the bill has finally passed the house of representatives.

thanks

Help! [08 Nov 2009|04:20pm]

aus_cattle_dogs

[movie_x_script]
I have a legit question that has been weighing on my mind since I rescued my aussie. He just turned one and it seems he is getting worse and worse with little kids, especially. He has plenty of property to run around, and the youngest person in my house is 22, but when I walk him for his bathroom breaks (on a leash) and he spots a child, he goes nuts. It's scary, actually. He gets uncontrollable and darts under my legs. Kids run away scared and crying. When they first spot Buddy, children want to come over to play with him because he is so unique-looking and he is so cute, but I get very freaked out and say "No". I do NOT want a biting incident. I am afraid he will nip and I don't just mean at the feet (because that's nature), but anywhere. I do not want to give him up because he is quite literally my Buddy, but it's becoming increasingly difficult to take him anywhere outside of my property. I don't want to live like a hermit, I want to be able to take my pup to Petsmart or to a dog park (he is great with other dogs!), it just seems to be that people are not his thing. How can I correct this?! Or is it too late for him? I don't want him to become Frankenstein's monster.
